Gelbvieh and Limousin Juniors Participate in the 2014 “Continental Undivided” POWER Conference

The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and North American Limousin Junior Association (NALJA) joined together to host the first POWER (Peers Organizing Winning Effective Results) Conference in Denver, Colo., August 7-10.

Board members from both junior associations partnered up to plan and host the event. Twenty-two members of the AGJA and 23 members of the NALJA took part in the four-day conference. While in Denver, participants were able to connect with other AGJA and NALJA members, learn more about the beef industry, and enhance their leadership skills.

“The first POWER conference was an incredible experience for the junior members who attended,” says Grace Hammer, AGJA president from Wallace, Kan. “Each activity allowed junior members to network and make connections with other juniors and industry leaders, while acquiring valuable knowledge that will position these young leaders to be successful in the agriculture industry,” she added. Grace not only was able to attend the four days of activities but also played a major role in helping to plan the event.

The conference featured many speakers including Kevin Ochsner, a Limousin breeder in Kersey, Colo., and host of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s “Cattlemen to Cattlemen.” Motivational speakers Eddie Slowikowski and Cole Smith engaged the participants in different team building and leadership activities. Former AGJA president, Travis Arp, also spoke. He is currently a technical services manager at the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

Also during the conference, participants made several industry visits including Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where they participated in a ropes course team building activity, and toured campus and the agriculture research facility. Magness Land & Cattle, a Limousin operation in Platteville, Colo., gave the POWER participants a tour of their facilities and put on a mini judging contest. A visit to the Denver Aquarium, and tours of Rocky Mountain Sire Services in Bennett, Colo., and Jumping Cow Gelbvieh in Ramah, Colo., rounded out the weekend activities.

“The POWER conference was a great success and we look forward to making this a permanent part of both junior associations’ program activities by hosting the conference every other year,” says Carrie Tilghman, junior activities coordinator for the American Gelbvieh Association.

American Gelbvieh Association Releases New Search Tools

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has released new search tools on its registry service. These tools include a ranch search, an animal search, an EPD and genetics search, plus a breeder map. All tools are available to cattlemen and women to help locate Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics and breeders.

The ranch search can be used to find active Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders, either in a general area or when looking for contact information for a specific breeder. Ranches and members can be searched by herd prefix, member number, name, city or state. When a member is searched, phone numbers, addresses, and contact information are displayed.

The AGA registry service also contains a breeder map function, allowing breeders to be found in a particular region or state. The map is interactive making it easy to find seedstock breeders in a desired location.

The animal search option allows a quick way to look up information on an animal’s pedigree, EPDs, performance data, ownership and more. An animal can be searched using registration number, tattoo or name and can be narrowed down by bull or female. This search ultimately brings up an animal detail screen where information on the animal can be viewed. This is a great tool for looking up current EPDs on herd bulls to help producers evaluate their bull battery to determine if replacements are needed.

The EPD search is a tool can be used to find animals with a desired set of EPDs. Producers can use the EPD search to find animals with the genetics that will meet the goals of a program. Within the EPD search, all AGA EPDs and indexes are listed, including AGA’s maternal index the $Cow, the carcass index labeled the feeder profit index (FPI) and the feed efficiency index named the efficiency profit index (EPI). Minimum and maximum values may be set on each EPD and index allowing producers to locate animals with the genetics to fit any environment.

An additional search tools feature is located on the AGA registry service and can be used to find animals with other search filters beyond EPDs. Use the search tools feature to search by breed (Gelbvieh, Balancer, Southern Balancer®, fullblood, or percentage), color, horn/polled status, to find AI sires or to search females who qualified for AGA’s Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction programs.

All search tools can be found on the Association’s home page at www.www.gelbvieh.org by clicking on the Animal and Member Search banner. These tools are available to the public and do not require login information. To learn more about these search tools, video tutorials are available and are located on the Registry Service Tutorials page on the Gelbvieh website.

Champions Parade at NAILE Eastern National Gelbvieh Show

The 2014 Eastern National Gelbvieh and Balancer® show was held at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky. A total of 89 animals were exhibited by breeders across the country. Judge Scott Schaake of Manhattan, Kansas evaluated the 35 Gelbvieh females, 12 Gelbvieh bulls, 32 Balancer females, and 10 Balancer bulls.

The grand champion Gelbvieh female was exhibited by Allie Raab, Markle, Indiana. BCFG Butlers Lulu 549A is a January 21, 2013 daughter of BCFG Butlers Code Red 506T ET. This champion female first claimed the junior heifer division.

Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana, showed the reserve champion Gelbvieh female. GGGE 3G Cowgirl Belinda 449B is a March 1, 2014 daughter of GGGE 3G Space Cowboy and first claimed the spring heifer calf division.

Overmiller Gelbvieh of Smith Center, Kansas and Emily Griffiths of Kendallville, Indiana own the grand champion Gelbvieh bull. GGGE 3G Aristotle 320A ET is a January 13, 2013 son of GGGE 3G Time Machine 758T ET and was first claimed the junior bull division.

Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana, showed the reserve champion Gelbvieh bull. GGGE 3G Bandoleer 458B is a March 3, 2014 son of GGE 3G Time Machine 758T ET. He first won the spring bull calf division.

In the Balancer show, grand champion Balancer female went to PLA Miss Zelda 20Z. Exhibited by Green Hills Gelbvieh, Mt Ulla, North Carolina, she is the February 12, 2012 daughter of SAV Pioneer 7301 and was first named champion cow/calf pair.

The reserve champion Balancer female was CTR Lass 3200A owned by LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kansas. First claiming the junior heifer division, she is an April 2, 2013 daughter of CTR Sandhills 0065X.

Grand champion Balancer bull was GGGE 3G EZ Money 209Z owned by Overmiller Gelbvieh, Smith Center, Kansas and Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana. This January 16, 2012 son of Duff Basic Instinct 6501 first claimed the two year old bull division.

Reserve champion Balancer bull was owned LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kansas. AHL Anchorman 472B ET is a March 2, 2014 son of XXB Wingman 639T ET and first claimed the spring bull calf division.

The premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards both went to Emily Griffiths. Hill Country Gelbvieh of Hondo, Texas was named premier herdsman.

The 2014 NAILE Junior Gelbvieh Show was held on Saturday, November 15. A total of 21 Gelbvieh females were evaluated by John Grimes, Hillsboro, Ohio.

The grand champion Gelbvieh heifer was exhibited by Connor Durham, Piedmont, South Carolina. GGGE 3G Athena 312A ET is the January 5, 2013 daughter of GGGE 3G Time Machine 758T ET.

The reserve champion Gelbvieh heifer was GDX 312A exhibited by Anna Duxbury, Wessington, South Dakota. This heifer is a February 27, 2013 daughter of PLA Big Dog 101Y.

Kelsey Sheeley, Hillsboro, Ohio exhibited the grand champion bred and owned Gelbvieh heifer. KJSG MV De Anna 403A is a January 11, 2013 daughter of GGGE 3G Warlock 928W.

The Genetic Power Gelbvieh and Balancer® bull sale was held the second Saturday in March. The sale featured 95 bulls raised by J Bar M Gelbvieh, Stark City, Mo.; J & K Farms, Ava, Ill.; and Hilltop Farms, Asbury, Mo.

The top selling bull of the day was Lot 69, JEMG Impact A691, who sold for $20,000. He is a January 19, 2013, double black, homozygous polled, 75 percent bull, sired by HYEK Black Impact 3960N and out of CMGF Clinchmt Ms Legacy 1042X. After active bidding, J Bar M Gelbvieh and Hilltop Farms teamed up to purchase this exciting young sire.

Lot 1, JKGF LWHF Super Flex Z353, was the second high-selling bull at $13,000 to Prairie Hills Gelbvieh of Gladstone, N.D. This September 9, 2012, homozygous black and homozygous polled, purebred Gelbvieh bull was sired by JKGF Reflex X4 ET and out of LWHF JKGF Twila 353W ET.

Lot 33, JKGF Future Invstmnt A121ET, sold for $10,750 to Gustin’s Diamond D Ranch in Mandan, N.D. He is a February 3, 2013, homozygous black, homozygous polled, purebred Gelbvieh son of JKGF Future Investment X037 and out of a CTR Highlight 066K dam.

The annual Tennessee Beef Agribition Gelbvieh show and sale was held on March 7-8, 2014 at Lebanon, Tennessee.

The champion Gelbvieh bull was Lot 12, Butler’s Royal Code 207A, consigned by Butler Creek Farms. Ryan Baker of Bristol, Ind., was the winning bidder at $4,000. The reserve Gelbvieh bull was Lot 9, Mr. P Daddy, exhibited by Colby James. He was purchased by Landon Gulley of Hartsville, Tenn., for $4,250.

The second highest selling bull was Lot 11, Butler’s LoJack 53A, consigned by Butler Creek Farms. Dale Dies of Lebanon, Tenn., purchased this bull for $4,200. The fourth highest selling bull was Lot 1, GHGF 8Z, consigned by Green Hills Gelbvieh and purchased by Larry Crowell of Waverly, Tenn., for $3,400.

The champion Gelbvieh female was Lot 15, Classy Lady 51A, and was consigned by Gooseponds Farm. Calvin Jones of Jones Farm in Smithville, Tenn., won the bid at $1,900. The reserve Gelbvieh female was Lot 17, X Factors Vision 2A, consigned by Lucas Waters. She was purchased by Issac Lee of Greenville, Tenn., for $2,100.

The second highest selling female was Lot 16, Ms. Blackjack 1313A, consigned by Clinch Mountain Gelbvieh Farm. Lot 16 was purchased by M and W Farms of Maryville, Tenn., for $2.000. Also selling for $2,000 was Lot 22, Cash Z910, consigned by Valley View Farm. Lot 22 also sold to Jones Farm of Smithville, Tenn.

An embryo package consigned by C-Cross Cattle Company of Asheboro, N.C., consisting of the mating EHE 607 x JKGF Reflex X4 was also featured and purchased by Little Windy Hill Farms of Max Meadows, Va., for $5,250.
