Changes to Gelbvieh American Rancher Episode Premiere

The American Gelbvieh Association is excited to debut its very first episode of the popular TV show, The American Rancher, next week on RFD-TV! The AGA’s American Rancher episode will now premiere on Tuesday, February 23 at 12:00 a.m. CST. The episode was originally set to premiere on Monday, February 22 at 8:00 p.m. CST, however there has been a last-minute revision to the airing schedule due to RFD-TV pre-empting the airtime for a LIVE show featuring RFD-TV owner and founder Patrick Gottsch. Reruns and additional broadcasts of AGA’s first American Rancher will air the following dates and times:

     Tuesday, February 23 at 12:00 a.m. CST
     Sunday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m. CST
     Monday, March 28 at 8:00 p.m. CST
     Tuesday, March 29 at 12:00 a.m. CST
     Sunday, April 3 at 11:00 a.m. CST

Kim Rounds Hired as Gelbvieh Spring Intern

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) announces the hiring of Kim Rounds, Grass Valley, California, as an association intern. Rounds will be assisting members in recording of data, DNA testing, membership questions, bull customer assistance and any other aspects of AGA operations.

Rounds grew up on her family’s ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, where they raised commercial cattle and she showed her own string of club calves. She previously served as the California representative on the National Beef Ambassador team, traveling around the country promotion beef with the American National CattleWomen.

Rounds graduated from Colorado State University (CSU) in May of 2015 with a degree in animal and equine sciences. During her time at CSU Kim was very involved with many aspects of CSU and the College of Agricultural Sciences. She served as the vice president of the Versatility Ranch Horse Team, teaching assistant for the Legends of Ranching Sale and training program, ag ambassador, chair on the board of student organization funding as well as co-chair for the event and promotions committee for the CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team.

“I am excited to learn more about the advancements Gelbvieh is making in both data collection and producer services,” Rounds said.

“In the last 18 months the AGA has been fortunate in sourcing the most talented staff available.  The educational background in animal and equine sciences that Kim possesses will serve her well in participating as a vital team member as an intern at the AGA. The staff in place will help further her education in the beef business while Kim provides service to the AGA membership and customer base,” said Myron Edelman, AGA executive director.

Martin Joins American Gelbvieh Association Staff

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) would like to welcome Mary Bea Martin to the staff as Member Services Specialist.

Martin grew up in Georgia, where she participated in junior livestock activities. She and her family actively showed cattle, lambs, and hogs and she considers the pinnacle of her junior livestock experience to be exhibiting the 2003 Reserve Champion Steer at the National Western Stock Show.

Martin graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2006 where she was very active on campus with several student and community service organizations.

Martin brings several years of customer service experience to the AGA staff. After graduation, Martin worked for Scarborough Specialties, a promotional product company in Amarillo, Texas. She then returned to her home state to work as an outside sales representative for Godfrey’s Feed in Madison, Georgia. In this position Martin was very involved in the state’s youth livestock program. After five years, she moved back to Texas and worked in the synthetic turf industry.

In addition, Martin was also a founding member of the Georgia Junior Livestock Foundation which raises money for junior livestock programs in the state. She is still an active board member for this organization. She has also served on the Georgia Cattlemen’s convention committee.

“I am very excited about returning to my livestock roots and to embark on this new venture with the American Gelbvieh Association,” says Martin.

TJB Gelbvieh Bull Sale

TJB Gelbvieh extended their very best of southern hospitality to an enthusiastic crowd of customers and family on a wet and nasty day in Chickamauga, Georgia. The outstanding set of yearling bulls was greatly appreciated and the sale was a great success. Leading the sale was Lot 1 TJB Addiction 417B, a BA75 Gunslinger son by one of the premier donors in the TJB program, 921U. He was purchased by Sleepy Creek Lands, LLC for $8,000 and will also be utilized in the AI program at TJB Gelbvieh. The next two bulls in the ring were also Gunslinger sons out of a full sister to 921U, TJB Anissa 913U. Sleepy Creek purchased Lot 2 for $6,500 and Lot 3 went to B/K Cattle Company in Missouri for $5,750.

Lot 5 was one of two red bulls in the sale sired by TJB Vasquez selling to Sleepy Creek for $6,800. Lot 25 was another Gunslinger sired bull out of TJB’s Vickie Vail family and he had many friends sale day but ultimately went to Bar IV Ranch in Kentucky for $7,300. B/K Cattle Company added a true calving ease sire by Derringer out of a full sister to resident herd sires Vasquez and Valero for $6,000. Finishing out the first pen of bulls was a Vasquez sired bull going to Jeff Hopper in Woodland, Alabama for $5,000 and a full brother to Valero going to Circle K Farms in KY for $4,500.

The rest of the sale was very consistent and sold in the $2,800 to $4000 range. The five commercial bred cows averaged $2,050 to finish the sale. Volume buyer was Sleepy Creek Lands, LLC.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Genetics Displayed During NWSS Pen Show

The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Show took place at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, January 10, 2016. A total of 19 pens were exhibited at this year’s show. Shane Bedwell, Kanas City, Missouri, judged the pen bull show.

Judd Ranch, Inc. of Pomona, Kansas, exhibited the grand champion and reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. The champion pen of three included three March-born bulls. This pen had an average weight of 1,137 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.68. All pen bulls are ultrasound scanned at the time of check-in. This champion pen had average actual scan data of 14.25 square inches for ribeye area, 3.08% IMF, and  0.25 inch of back fat.

The reserve pen of three Gelbvieh bulls were all February-born bulls and had an average weight of 1,233 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.65. This pen’s ultrasound scan data averaged a ribeye area of 15.09 square inches, 2.98% IMF, and 0.27 in of back fat.

Judd Ranch, Inc. also exhibited the grand champion pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. This pen included one January and four February-born bulls. The pen had an average weight of 1,141 pounds, with an average weight per day of age of 3.41. This set of bulls had average ultrasound scan data of 15.32 square inches for ribeye area, 3.45% IMF, and 0.27 inch of back fat.

In the Balancer pen show, Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska, exhibited the grand champion pen of three Balancer bulls. This pen consisted of all February-born bulls that averaged 1,267 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.89. This pen’s average ultrasound scan data is as follows: ribeye area of 15.49 square inches, 3.79% IMF, and 0.26 inch of back fat.

The reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls was exhibited by Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska. Their pen of January-born bulls averaged a weight of 1,373 pounds and 3.85 weight per day of age. This pen averaged 15.60 square inches for ribeye are, 3.77% IMF and 0.40 inch of back fat with their ultrasound scan data.

Taubenheim Gelbvieh also exhibited the grand champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This pen included four January and one February-born bulls. This champion pen had an average weight of 1,199 pounds and average weight per day of age of 3.45. The pen’s average ultrasound scan data was 14.67 square inches for ribeye area, 3.54% IMF, and 0.30 inch of back fat.

Bar Arrow Cattle Company, Phillipsburg, Kansas claimed the reserve champion pen of five bulls. This pen of February-born bulls combined to weigh an average of 1,293 pounds, giving them an average weight per day of age of 4.04. This pen’s average ultrasound scan data was as follows: ribeye area of 15.67 square inches, 3.53% IMF, and 0.36 inch of back fat.

Champions Parade at National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show

The 2016 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® show was held at the National Western Stock Show on Monday, January 11, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. A total of 226 animals were exhibited. Judge Chan Phillips, Maysville, Kentucky evaluated the 70 Gelbvieh females, 39 Gelbvieh bulls, 77 Balancer females, and 40 Balancer bulls.

Grand champion Gelbvieh female was EGL B281 owned by J W LeDoux, Agenda, Kansas. This heifer is an April 17, 2014 daughter of EGL Lock and Load X415 and was first named the champion junior yearling heifer.

The reserve grand champion Gelbvieh female came out of the same junior yearling heifer division. BCFG Butlers Bianca 534B is owned by Aidan Raab, Markle, Indiana and is the April 1, 2014 daughter of BCFG Butlers Impact 549U.

Ridinger Cattle Company, Deer Trail, Colorado, owns the grand champion Gelbvieh bull. AAD R Lawman 1467B is the son of CCRO Carolina Exclusive 1230Y. This bull, born

GGGE 3G Big Valley 4108B ET was named reserve grand champion Gelbvieh bull. Owned by Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana, this bull is the December 16, 2014 son of GGGE 3G Time Machine 758T ET and came out of the senior bull calf division.

In the Balancer show, the grand champion Balancer female was RAAB BCFG Ms. Valentine 214B owned by Aidan Raab, Markle, Indiana. She is a February 14, 2014 daughter of S A V Brilliance and first claimed the junior yearling heifer division.

GGGE 3G Cowgirl Banshee 484B was named reserve grand champion Balancer female. This heifer is owned by September Farms/Riddle & CO, Hildreth, Nebraska and first claimed the intermediate yearling heifer division. She is the May 6, 2014 daughter of GGGE 3G EZ Money 209Z.

LeDoux Ranch/Cedar Top Ranch, Agenda, Kansas, owns the grand champion Balancer bull. EGL Lifeline B101 is the January 18, 2014 son of S A V Final Answer 0035 and first won the junior yearling bull division.

The reserve grand champion Balancer bull was HYBD Scharpe James Bond 1121B ET owned by Scharpe Angus, Arlington, Minnesota. This bull is a June 15, 2014 son of CCRO Carolina Exclusive 1230Y and came out of the intermediate yearling bull division.

In the group classes, Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana claimed both champion produce of dam and champion get of sire. Both reserve champion produce of dam and reserve champion get of sire went to Green Hills Gelbvieh, Mt. Ulla, North Carolina. Champion best of four head and reserve champion best of four head both went to Green Hills Gelbvieh.

Premier breeder was Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Indiana and premier exhibitor was J W LeDoux, Agenda, Kansas.
