Gelbvieh and Balancer® Genetics Displayed During NWSS Pen Show
The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Show took place at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, January 10, 2016. A total of 19 pens were exhibited at this year’s show. Shane Bedwell, Kanas City, Missouri, judged the pen bull show.
Judd Ranch, Inc. of Pomona, Kansas, exhibited the grand champion and reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. The champion pen of three included three March-born bulls. This pen had an average weight of 1,137 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.68. All pen bulls are ultrasound scanned at the time of check-in. This champion pen had average actual scan data of 14.25 square inches for ribeye area, 3.08% IMF, and 0.25 inch of back fat.
The reserve pen of three Gelbvieh bulls were all February-born bulls and had an average weight of 1,233 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.65. This pen’s ultrasound scan data averaged a ribeye area of 15.09 square inches, 2.98% IMF, and 0.27 in of back fat.
Judd Ranch, Inc. also exhibited the grand champion pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. This pen included one January and four February-born bulls. The pen had an average weight of 1,141 pounds, with an average weight per day of age of 3.41. This set of bulls had average ultrasound scan data of 15.32 square inches for ribeye area, 3.45% IMF, and 0.27 inch of back fat.
In the Balancer pen show, Warner Beef Genetics, Arapahoe, Nebraska, exhibited the grand champion pen of three Balancer bulls. This pen consisted of all February-born bulls that averaged 1,267 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.89. This pen’s average ultrasound scan data is as follows: ribeye area of 15.49 square inches, 3.79% IMF, and 0.26 inch of back fat.
The reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls was exhibited by Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska. Their pen of January-born bulls averaged a weight of 1,373 pounds and 3.85 weight per day of age. This pen averaged 15.60 square inches for ribeye are, 3.77% IMF and 0.40 inch of back fat with their ultrasound scan data.
Taubenheim Gelbvieh also exhibited the grand champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This pen included four January and one February-born bulls. This champion pen had an average weight of 1,199 pounds and average weight per day of age of 3.45. The pen’s average ultrasound scan data was 14.67 square inches for ribeye area, 3.54% IMF, and 0.30 inch of back fat.
Bar Arrow Cattle Company, Phillipsburg, Kansas claimed the reserve champion pen of five bulls. This pen of February-born bulls combined to weigh an average of 1,293 pounds, giving them an average weight per day of age of 4.04. This pen’s average ultrasound scan data was as follows: ribeye area of 15.67 square inches, 3.53% IMF, and 0.36 inch of back fat.
