IGS Breeds to Host Youth Leadership Conference
The American Junior Simmental, Shorthorn and Gelbvieh Associations will host a joint leadership conference August 3-6, 2017, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Summit is an all-new youth leadership conference.
This Summit is open to any youth ages 14-22 interested in expanding their knowledge about the beef industry. Registration closes July 1, 2017 and can be found by visiting the hosting breeds websites or Facebook pages.
Participants will get the chance to tour the United States Meat Animal Research Center and GeneSeek Laboratories as well as learn about different aspects of the beef industry. They will also learn about professional development and leadership skills. The participants will also visit the University of Nebraska-Lincoln meats lab and have the chance to see a college campus that may help with their future.
This conference will help grow the unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations to enhance beef industry profitability through a youth leadership conference. The youth of this industry are the future of agriculture.

Gelbvieh Association Welcomes Tom Strahm as Commercial Marketing Director
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) would like to welcome Tom Strahm to the staff as commercial marketing director.
Strahm is from Sabetha, Kansas, where he lives with his wife, Carrie, and three children, Payton, Elliott, and Vivian.
Strahm has a wealth of beef industry experience, having spent time in several sectors of the industry including cattle procurement and cattle sales as well as in the cow-calf sector. In addition, Strahm also has experience in lending and finance after working as a loan officer for many years.
“I’m looking forward to meeting and supporting the members of the AGA,” says Strahm.
The principle goals of the AGA’s new Meeting Modern Industry Demands long-range strategic plan, has principle goals directly focusing on building demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. Strahm’s responsibilities will include those principles goals of feeder and commercial female marketing avenues, as well as serving cow-calf producers and the entire beef industry. Tom will also work with AGA members to assist them in building demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics.
“The Meeting Modern Industry Demands strategic plan is focused on the success of the commercial beef industry. We will need just the right team members to meet the goals of the strategic plan. Tom brings that industry experience we were looking for, with experience in purchasing both feeder and market-ready cattle, that he can put to work for our cow-calf producers as well as the feedyards that are feeding Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle,” says Myron Edelman, AGA executive director.

Champions Named at the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show
The 2017 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® show was held at the National Western Stock Show on Monday, January 9, 2017 in Denver, Colorado. A total of 203 animals were exhibited. Judge Shane Lindsey, Prairie City, Iowa, evaluated the 62 Gelbvieh females, 34 Gelbvieh bulls, 80 Balancer females, and 27 Balancer bulls.
The grand champion Gelbvieh female was HIGH Ms Miranda 9C17 ET owned by Grady Hammer, Wallace, Kansas. This February 18, 2015, daughter of JRI Pop a Top 197T83 first claimed the junior heifer division.
The reserve grand champion Gelbvieh female came out of the winter heifer calf division. RUPP Roxi 623D is owned by Karly Alexander, Perry, Oklahoma, and is the February 19, 2016, daughter of JRI Crusader 285Y99.
Royal Western Gelbvieh, Red Deer County, Alberta, Canada, owns the grand champion Gelbvieh bull. RWG Right Combination 5506 is the May 4, 2015 son of RWG War Admiral 2528 and first claimed the intermediate bull division.
JRI Prowler 125B3 was named the reserve grand champion Gelbvieh bull. Owned by Eagle Pass Mansfield, South Dakota, and LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kansas, this bull is the September 2, 2014, son of JRI Pop a Top 197T83 and first won the senior bull division.
In the Balancer show, the grand champion Balancer female was BCFG Butlers 133C, owned by Alexandria Raab, Markle, Indiana. She is the November 2, 2015, daughter of BCFG Butlers Bismarck 512Z and first claimed the senior heifer calf division.
KDV T Bar S A La Mode was named the reserve grand champion Balancer female. She is owned by Grace Vehige and Kyle Vehige, Bonnots Mill, Missouri, and is the November 24, 2014 daughter of JBOB Carolina 5423P ET. She first won the senior heifer division.
McCarty Cattle Company of Rifle, Colorado owns the grand champion Balancer bull. MCCA Capitol Hill 516C first won the junior bull division and is the January 25, 2015 son of SAV Brilliance 8077.
The reserve grand champion Balancer bull came out of the same division. VLK C503 Young Gun is owned by Post Rock Cattle Company, Barnard, Kansas, and is the March 19, 2015 son of BGGR Gravity 803A.
Butler Creek Farms, Milton, Tennessee, took home both the premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards.

Charriere Named Gelbvieh Association Breeder of the Year
Samee Charriere, of Ledgerwood Gelbvieh, Clarkston, Washington, was honored as the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Breeder of the Year for 2016 during the awards banquet held at the 46th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention on December 2, 2016 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Charriere was joined by her husband, Pete, at the banquet. Mark Hopfer, Days Creek, Oregon, and president of the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association, presented Charriere with the award.
Samee and Pete Charriere own and operate Ledgerwood Gelbvieh in conjunction with Rafter C Reds. The operation consists of about 130 registered Gelbvieh females, 20 Red Angus females, as well as an extensive commercial operation of 500 cows. Their vested interest in both registered seedstock genetics and commercial cow-calf production provides them with an understanding of what cattlemen and women in the area desire. It’s Ledgerwood Gelbvieh’s goal to produce bulls that will work for the commercial cattle producer. This coming March, Ledgerwood Gelbvieh will host their opening day bull sale where they will sell 40 yearling Gelbvieh and Red Angus bulls and 15 coming two-year-old Gelbvieh bulls.
Ledgerwood Gelbvieh has been a member of the AGA since 2005. Charriere is active within the association and participates in several shows throughout the West, such as the Northern International Livestock Exposition, National Western Stock Show as well as the Oregon State Fair. Charriere currently serves as the secretary/treasurer of the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association and is a member of the Montana Gelbvieh Association. She is also active in her state cattlemen’s association.

Champions Named at NWSS Gelbvieh and Balancer Junior Heifer Show
The Junior Gelbvieh and Balancer® Heifer Show at the National Western Stock Show was held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Denver, Colorado. Judge Brian Barragree, Absarokee, Montana, evaluated the 20 Gelbvieh and 37 Balancer females.
Grand Champion Gelbvieh Heifer was HIGH Ms Miranda 9C17 ET owned by Grady Hammer, Wallace, Kansas. This heifer first claimed the Gelbvieh junior yearling heifer division and is the February 18, 2015 daughter of JRI Pop A Top 197T83.
RUPP Roxi 623D, owned by Karly Alexander, Perry, Oklahoma claimed reserve champion Gelbvieh heifer. This February 19, 2016 heifer is sired by JRI Crusader 285Y99 and first claimed the Gelbvieh heifer calf division.
Grand Champion Balancer Heifer was EGL Vivian C1083. This heifer is owned by J W LeDoux, Agenda, Kansas, and first claimed the Balancer junior yearling heifer division. She is the March 25, 2015 daughter of Eagle Pass Final Answer 1047.
Reserve Grand Champion Balancer Heifer was BCFG Butlers 133C, owned by Alexandria Raab, Markle, Indiana. This heifer also came out of the Balancer senior heifer calf division and is the November 2, 2015 daughter of BCFG Butlers Bismarck 512Z.
Higgins Named Gelbvieh Association Commercial Producer of the Year
Barry Higgins of Russellville, Kentucky, was honored as the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Commercial Producer of the Year during the awards banquet held at the 46th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska on Friday, December 2, 2016.
Higgins was joined by his wife, Kim; son, Cody, and daughter Kameron at the banquet. Myron Edelman, AGA executive director, presented Higgins with the award.
The AGA Commercial Producer of the Year Award honors individuals who use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in progressive commercial cattle operations and are proactive in their promotion of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed.
Higgins has worked hard to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle for the past 10 years. He and his family own and operate H and H Farms, a 500 head cow-calf operation, and the Russellville Livestock Market located in Russellville, Kentucky.
Higgins bought his first Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls in 2004. Higgins mentioned he started using Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls for the added muscle and growth along with improved disposition. As a result, Higgins’ weaning weights have increased 75 to 100 pounds since he has been using high-quality Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls.
In 2011, Higgins organized a group of commercial cattle producers in southwestern Kentucky that utilize Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls and started a special Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder calf sale, which is held each July at Russellville Livestock Market. The sale has been very beneficial for the group and they usually sell between 600 to 800 head of feeder calves consigned by eight consigners. The sale has consistently averaged $10 to $12 a hundred over the local market.
