Slater to Serve as Gelbvieh Association Interim Executive Director

BROOMFIELD, CO – American Gelbvieh Association President Scott Starr and the Board of Directors would like to announce Megan Slater as its interim executive director.

Slater has been with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) since 2014 and has most recently held the position of director of operations and public relations. In her time at the AGA, Slater has played a vital role in maintaining the Gelbvieh message through marketing efforts and membership communication, office operations, and the planning of the AGA National Convention.

“For the past seven months, Megan has done an impressive job of running the AGA by exhibiting organization, knowledge, and ability,” Starr said. “The board feels we have one of the bright upcoming individuals in the beef industry and are honored to have her on the AGA team.”

In her role as interim executive director, Slater will continue to lead the AGA staff in accomplishing the goals of the AGA’s Meeting Modern Industry Demands Strategic Plan.

Slater is a graduate of Colorado State University (CSU) with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and minor in business administration. Through her involvement at CSU and her time at AGA, Slater has gained valuable beef industry and business experience.

“I am excited for this new opportunity with the AGA and look forward to continuing to grow the Association and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed’s market share within the beef industry,” Slater said. “It’s an honor to continue to work with AGA members and Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders in this new role.”

Gelbvieh Association, IMI Global Release Balancer® Edge Source and Age Verification Program

BROOMFIELD, CO – The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is pleased to announce a recent partnership with IMI Global and introduce Balancer® Edge, a source and age verification program for feeder cattle sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls.

The Balancer® Edge program requires a minimum of 75% of the sires used to be registered Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls, and these bulls must be a minimum of 25% Gelbvieh genetics. The verification process for this program requires producers to submit first and last calf born date, head count support, and registration papers of the sires to verify Gelbvieh genetics.

The Source and Age Verification (SAV) program has been in practice in the beef industry since 2004, and continues to play an important role in adding value to U.S. beef producers. Balancer® Edge meets the SAV base requirement for cattle to be eligible for marketing into the China Export Verification program, the Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC) program for the EU, Verified Natural Beef, GAP 5-step Animal Welfare and others. In addition, Balancer® Edge documentation is eligible for establishing age of animals at the processor and is also now an accepted method of determining maturity of animals for grading purposes – ensuring they fall into the A maturity category if they are under 30 months of age at harvest.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Balancer® Edge program to add new market opportunities to their progressive producer base,” said Doug Stanton, VP of Business Development at IMI Global. “Buyers continue to push for more options when it comes to cattle marketing. They are looking to maximize their value opportunity with an animal by having many directions to go with it, and verification programs add that kind of flexibility. The Balancer® Edge program will open new doors for producers to access markets they may not have been eligible for before, bringing more value back home to the ranch.”

IMI Global has been offering verification services to the beef industry since 1996 and is the uncontested leader in those services today. IMI is an accredited, independent verification company who evaluates specific attributes or practices associated with livestock production and provides an unbiased assessment of the ability of any animal or group of animals to meet those specific standards or claims.

“Balancer® Edge provides the opportunity for producers utilizing Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics to participate in a breed identified program and have their production practices verified to be able to add value and gain additional marketing opportunities for their cattle,” said Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director. “In addition, IMI Global’s recent partnership with the IGS Feeder Profit Calculator™ allows producers to quantify the genetic merit of the animal’s they are selling.”

The American Gelbvieh Association is a progressive beef cattle breed association dedicated to the recording, promoting, and improving Gelbvieh-influenced cattle. The Gelbvieh and Balancer breeds are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With these attributes, Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle fit well into a crossbreeding system and provide genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.

Congratulations to Addison Starr, Stapleton, Nebraska, and Cameron Nowack, Bland, Missouri, for being selected as the American Gelbvieh Junior Association’s (AGJA) ambassadors for 2018-2019. The two winners were announced on July 6, 2018, at the 2018 Corn Fed Classic, which was held in Waterloo, Iowa.

Addison Starr, daughter of Scott and Raberta Starr, was chosen as the AGJA Intermediate Ambassador. In addition to her new role, she is actively involved in FFA, 4-H, volleyball, basketball and has won public speaking awards at regional speech contests. Addison also serves as sophomore class president at McPherson County High School.

During her time as ambassador, Addison hopes to educate Gelbvieh youth and others in the beef industry of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed’s relevance in the commercial industry and the important role acceptance in the commercial sector plays into a breed’s success.

“The strength of any breed is really based on its commercial acceptance… This is something that is very important to know because it affects every juniors’ future.”

Cameron Nowack, daughter of Jared and Caisie Nowack, was chosen as the AGJA Junior Ambassador. Cameron is a sixth grader involved in 4-H, basketball, and of course, AGJA.

As an ambassador, Cameron hopes to be able to encourage other AGJA members to push themselves out of their comfort zones and participate in more educational contests.

“But most importantly, I wanted to become the American Gelbvieh Junior Association 2018-2019 Junior Ambassador because I want to give back to the association that has helped me become who I am today and that inspires me to be better for tomorrow,” Cameron said.

The AGJA created the ambassador program to encourage and support youth involvement in the breed’s activities. The ambassadors represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year including the North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show, along with many state fairs and other events.

The American Gelbvieh Junior Association is the junior division of the American Gelbvieh Association. The AGJA provides members up to 21 years of age the opportunity to participate in youth activities.
