Champions Parade at American Royal Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show

In what is becoming an honored tradition, the Gelbvieh and Balancer® show kicked off the 2013 American Royal livestock show. The 75-head show was held on Saturday, October 26 in Kemper Arena at the American Royal complex. Chris Sankey of Council Grove, Kan., evaluated the 36 Gelbvieh females, 14 Gelbvieh bulls, 15 Balancer females, and ten Balancer bulls.

Showing the grand champion Gelbvieh female was Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Ind. 3G Cowgirl Zesta 204Z is a January 14, 2012 daughter of 3G Time Machine 758T ET. This heifer first claimed the junior yearling heifer division.

Coming out of the same junior yearling heifer division was the reserve champion Gelbvieh female. MDR Princess 200Z is an April 3, 2012 daughter of BCFG Butlers Red Oak. This female is owned by JW LeDoux, Agenda, Kan.

The grand champion Gelbvieh bull was 3G Zipline owned by Kelly Overmiller, Smith Center, Kan. This son of 3G Excellence was born April 18, 2012 and first won the junior bull division.

Circle S Ranch of Canton, Kan., owned the reserve champion Gelbvieh bull. CIRS Yard Art is a January 21, 2013 son of CIRS Decade and was first named champion junior bull calf.

In the Balancer show, grand champion Balancer female was owned by JW LeDoux, Agenda, Kan. AHL Forever Lady is a December 31, 2012 daughter of 3G Smoke N Mirrors. This champion female came out of the senior heifer calf division.

Benny McWilliams, Asbury, Mo., owned the reserve champion Balancer female. First named champion junior yearling heifer, HTFG Ms Zina Z532 is a March 1, 2012 daughter of JRI Enhancer 53U21.

Kelly Overmiller struck again with the grand champion Balancer bull. 3G EZ Money is a January 16, 2012 son of DUFF Basic Instinct and first claimed the junior bull division.

Emily Griffiths had the reserve champion Balancer bull. 3G Zeus 299Z is a December 30, 2012 son of SAV Bismark 5682 and was first named champion senior bull calf.

In the group classes, first place produce of dam went to Circle S Ranch; first place get-of-sire went to Emily Griffiths; and the best four head was exhibited by Emily Griffiths. At the end of the show, Griffiths was also named premier exhibitor and premier breeder.

The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Ring of Gold Show was one of the first shows to kick off the 2011 American Royal Livestock Show on Saturday, October 22 in Kansas City, Mo. A total of 61 Gelbvieh and Balancer entries were exhibited by 22 breeders. Brandon Callis of Washington, Texas evaluated the 28 Gelbvieh females, 10 Gelbvieh bulls, 15 Balancer females and eight Balancer bulls.

Emily Griffiths, Kendallville, Ind., exhibited both the grand and reserve grand champion Gelbvieh females. Grand champion honors went to 3G X Factor 014X, a January 6, 2010 daughter of 3G Time Machine 758T ET. This heifer was first named junior yearling heifer champion. The reserve grand female came out of the spring heifer calf division. 3G Yes Please 183Y is a May 22, 2011 daughter of 3G Time Machine 758T.

The grand champion Gelbvieh bull was exhibited by Circle S Ranch, Canton, Kan. CIRS 39RY is a February 23, 2011 son of CIRS Decade 278U2 and was first named junior bull calf champion.

Hart Farm, Kansas City, Kan., exhibited the reserve grand champion Gelbvieh bull. HFGC HART 35W34 is an October 28, 2009 son of HFGC HF Roscoe 34P59 ET and was first the senior bull champion.

In the Balancer show, Emily Griffiths had the grand champion balancer female with a cow-calf pair. 3G Cowgirl Wisdom 951W is a March 3, 2009 daughter of 3G Smoke N’ Mirrors.

The reserve grand champion Balancer female was exhibited by LeDoux Ranch, Agenda, Kan. AHL Forever Lady 114X is a January 4, 2010 daughter of XXB Wingman 639T. This heifer was first named junior yearling heifer champion.

The grand champion Balancer bull was 3G Warlock 928W, also exhibited by Emily Griffiths. He is a February 7, 2009 son of 3G Smoke N’ Mirrors and came out of the senior bull division.

T Bar S Cattle Company, Bonnots Mill, Mo., had the reserve grand champion Balancer bull. T BAR S Flintstone 10X is a March 18, 2010 son of Gerloff Newsline 6233 and was first named the junior bull champion.

BIF: Beef industry’s best kept secret

Behind the scenes lies a sleeping giant — the root of genetic prediction and the resulting expected progeny differences (EPDs) widely utilized by the industry today. The purpose of the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) is subtle, but ultimately paramount when viewing the impact of genetic selection tools in the seedstock industry.

Benefits of BIF

Catalyst.The BIF serves as an arena to bring members of the cattle industry, scientists and industry affiliates together to address current and future beef cattle topics, particularly in the area of genetic improvement. Simply stated in the introduction of the BIF Guidelines for Uniform Beef Improvement Programs, Ninth Edition, 2010, BIF serves “To develop cooperation among all segments of the beef industry in the compilation and utilization of performance records to improve efficiency, profitability and sustainability of beef production.”

Performance Resource.The BIF Guidelines are a widely referenced document that over time has served to guide breed organizations and international communities on performance recording, analysis, interpretation and implementation. While the Guidelines serve only to be a reference in assisting the beef cattle community and member organizations with performance topics, this resource is a compilation of recommended standard procedures based on scientific research and industry experience. One example of its impact would be conveyed in sections that describe EPDs and their computational algorithms.

Education and Outreach. Each year the BIF holds an annual convention and tour at a specific U.S. or Canadian location. The annual convention is typically attended by 400-600 individuals representing various facets of the beef industry. 

Recognition.BIF leaders in the commercial and seedstock industry are recognized annually for their commitment, progress and service to beef cattle genetic improvement. Producers learn by example. These industry leaders are showcased at the annual convention and through the BIF website outreach. In addition, service and legacy awards are presented each year to scientists, extension specialists and advocates or ambassadors of the performance message.

Historical Background and Membership

The Beef Improvement Federation was formed Feb. 1, 1968, and is a federation comprised of member organizations including:

·         Provincial, state and national beef cattle improvement associations and other organizations that sponsor beef cattle improvement;

·         Breed associations in the United States and Canada that are involved in performance programs;

·         Representatives from other organizations, such as the National Association of Animal Breeders, USDA-ARS, National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium, and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association; and

·         Associate members interested in beef cattle performance.
