Quality Bulls Exhibited During NWSS Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Show

The Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Show took place at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, January 11, 2015. A total of 15 pens were exhibited at this year's show. Doug Hixon, Laramie, Wyoming, judged the pen bull show.

Judd Ranch, Inc. of Pomona, Kansas, exhibited the grand champion and reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. The champion pen included two February and one January-born bulls. The champion pen had an average weight of 1,343 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.94. All pen bulls are ultrasound scanned at the time of check-in. This champion pen had average actual scan data of 15.97 square inches for ribeye area, 2.78% IMF, and 0.21 inch of back fat.

The reserve pen of three Gelbvieh bulls were all February-born and had an average weight of 1,335 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.94 pounds. This pen's ultrasound scan data averaged a ribeye area of 16.67 square inches, 2.49% IMF, and 0.34 inch of back fat.

Judd Ranch, Inc. also exhibited the grand champion pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. This pen included four January and one March-born bulls. The pen had an average weight of 1,276 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.70 pounds per day. This pen had average ultrasound data of 16.08 square inches for ribeye area, 2.98% IMF, and 0.24 inch of back fat.

In the Balancer pen show, Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska, exhibited the grand champion pen of three Balancer bulls. This pen consisted of two January and one February-born bulls that averaged 1,387 pounds and an average of 3.94 pounds per day of age. This pen's average ultrasound scan data is as follows: ribeye area of 15.25 square inches, 3.42% IMF, and 0.30 inch of back fat.

The reserve champion pen of three Balancer bulls was exhibited by Beastrom Ranch, Pierre, South Dakota. Their pen of March-born bulls had an average weight 1,231 pounds and had an average weight per day of age of 4.05. This pen averaged 14.07 square inches for ribeye area, 3.31% IMF, and 0.23 inch of back fat with their ultrasound data.

Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, South Dakota, exhibited the grand champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This champion pen included one January and four February-born bulls that had an average weight of 1,260 pounds and an average weight per day of age of 3.82 pounds per day. This pen's average actual ultrasound scan data was 15.29 square inches for ribeye area, 3.65% IMF, and 0.34 inch of back fat.

Taubenheim Gelbvieh claimed the reserve champion pen of five Balancer bulls. This pen of three January and two February-born bulls combined to weigh an average of 1,280 pounds, giving them an average weight per day of age of 3.69 pounds per day. This pen's ultrasound data was as follows: ribeye area of 15.33 square inches, 3.62% IMF, and 0.30 inch of back fat.
