Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants Fourth Annual Fall Bull and Female Sale Report

The Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants (MBCC) team held their fourth annual fall bull and female sale on November 4, 2023, in Carthage, Indiana. Sixteen Balancer®, Simmental-Angus-Gelbvieh composite and Angus bulls sold for an average of $4,712, and 31 registered and commercial Balancer bred heifers and pairs averaged $3,182.

The high-selling bull at $8,600 was MSCM M5JH The Big Ugly K6, a 50% Balancer from M5 Ag Service. This Tehama Tahoe son is a half-brother to the high selling bull in our spring 2023 sale. “K6” is in the top 35% in 15 EPDs and $Indexes with a CED to YW spread of 16 to 140 and a top 10% stayability. Jeff Ryan of Harrison, Arkansas, was the buyer.

WK Patriarch 12K from Wirth Farms was the second high selling bull at $7,200. This calving ease Angus bull with a top 1% WW and YW EPD will go to work on the Balancer heifers at long-time customer Chet Thompson’s farm in Washington, Ind.

John and Karen Kestler had MSCM M5JH 78’s Eagle K4 circled as their top choice and purchased this Simmental-Angus-Gelbvieh composite at $5,600. He will join their other MBCC bulls at their farm in nearby Batesville, Ind. This Hook’s Eagle 6E son out of a Balancer cow will add hybrid vigor to the Kestler herd. “K4” has 14 EPDs and $Indexes in the top 35%. The next high selling bull at $5,500 was Balancer, LFP Liber Pater 8K from Poehlein Family Farms going to K&K Farms, Kevin and Kenyon Hostetler, Green Forest, Ark. This ERTL Absolute Ditka 218F son is top 3% WW and 2% YW.

In the female sale, two commercial bred heifers topped the sale at $4,300 and $4,000. These Gelbvieh-Angus-Charolais-Hereford hybrids were brought to the sale by MBCC customer, Brian Bigham of London, Ohio. They are sired by and bred to MBCC bulls and were purchased by Pat Mohr of Greenfield, Ind., and Larry Thomas of Paoli, Ind., for early March calves. At $3,700 was MBCC Kelli 24K, a registered Balancer heifer from Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants sired by MCC Reward 4F and bred to MSCM Tahoe E118 52K the high selling bull from our spring 2023 sale. Ben Poehlein, Sullivan, Ind., was the buyer. He also took home two other registered females to add to his seedstock herd. Larry Thomas also purchased BMT Rochelle 50K for $3,650. This registered Balancer heifer is also bred to MSCM Tahoe E118 52K. This heifer was from MBCC member, John and Carli Hinton. Thomas was the high-volume buyer with five head.

Riedie Cattle had the high-selling fall pair at $3,500 going to Calvin Finch in Brookville, Ind. ERTL 034H Twister Danny Girl 745 had a stout heifer calf at side by Reidie’s Civil War son.

Additional volume buyers were Frank Kochert of Lafayette, Ind., Craig Coon of Kewanna, Ind., and Bob Bertsch of Connersville, Ind., each with four head of bred heifers and Chris Wiese of Reynolds, Ind., with three pairs.
